Monstera Indoor Plant Growing and Care Guide

Commonly known as the Swiss Cheese Plant, Monstera is instantly recognizable by the holes in its large, unique leaves. With leaves ranging in color from emerald green to deep forest green, Monstera has become a quintessential tropical indoor foliage plant. This climbing vine is native to the tropical rainforests of Central America. When grown indoors, it will reach a much smaller size than in nature, depending on pot size, variety, and light exposure. Learn how to grow and care for your Monstera to keep it healthy.

Essential Tips for Monstera Care

Monstera might seem a bit daunting for first-time indoor plant owners, but it's actually a relatively easy plant to care for. Even with little experience in plant care, anyone can fully enjoy the charm of Monstera at home.

Light

As a tropical plant, Monstera requires plenty of light. Provide approximately 5-8 hours of bright, indirect light per day. Variegated Monstera varieties need more light to maintain and develop the beautiful colors of their leaves. For variegated types, it's recommended to provide about 5-12 hours of light per day.

Place your Monstera near a north or south-facing window to ensure it receives ample natural light. However, depending on the season and indoor environment, especially in winter, it might be difficult to get enough light. In such cases, using a grow light can help your Monstera continue to grow healthily.

Soil and Watering

Monstera generally needs watering about once every 1-2 weeks. When watering, ensure the entire soil is thoroughly soaked, and check that water drains well from the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot.

It's best to promptly discard any standing water in the saucer or water the plant in a location where water can drain freely, such as a terrace, shower, or sink. To prevent root rot, wait for the soil to dry out somewhat between waterings. Additionally, using well-draining potting mix is crucial.

Temperature and Humidity

Like most indoor plants, Monstera prefers warm temperatures, around 18-29°C. Be careful not to let the indoor temperature drop below 15°C. Sudden cold can stress Monstera and halt its growth.

Monstera grows relatively well in typical indoor humidity. However, if your home environment is on the drier side, using a humidifier is a good option. Lightly misting the leaves once a week can also help create the tropical environment Monstera loves.

Fertilizer

Monstera is a fast-growing plant, so consistent fertilization is important. During the spring and summer growing seasons, fertilize about once a month. A balanced liquid all-purpose fertilizer with a 20-20-20 ratio is convenient for providing nutrients easily.

How to Prune Monstera

Monstera grows quickly, often by about 30-60 cm per year. With such rapid growth, regular pruning is important for the plant's shape and health. Trim away any yellowing leaves or wilting, weakened stems to help the plant grow healthily.

How to Pot and Repot Monstera

Monstera generally needs repotting every 2-3 years for healthy growth. Signs that the plant needs a larger pot include roots growing out of the drainage holes, slowed or stunted growth, the soil drying out faster than before, or extensive leaf wilting.

The appropriate pot size for your plant can vary depending on its current size and growth rate. It's better to gradually increase the pot size rather than moving it to a much larger pot all at once. Too much excess soil can keep the soil wet for too long, increasing the risk of root rot.

Choosing unglazed clay or terracotta pots can also be a good idea, as they help keep the soil relatively dry while still providing adequate moisture to the roots.

When potting, install a moss pole or wooden stake to provide stable support for the plant. You can gently secure the vines to the support with string or wire. This also helps the aerial roots climb the support as they grow.

Monstera's long stems and broad leaves can be easily damaged during the repotting process, so handle them carefully, supporting the stems and leaves sufficiently during the procedure.

How to Propagate Monstera

Monstera is a very easy plant to propagate. The simplest method is stem cuttings. First, select a healthy, growing stem with a few leaves. When taking cuttings, cut just below a node, which is the point where a leaf connects to the stem.

Then, place the cut stem in a glass of water and wait for roots to develop. Roots typically take about 2-3 weeks to grow. When propagating in water, change the water every 3-5 days to prevent the cutting from rotting.

Monstera can also be propagated through division. This method involves separating a portion of one plant to grow as a new individual. The best time to do this is when repotting the plant, as it's easier to inspect the entire root system.

Select the part you wish to separate, then carefully separate it from the rest of the plant, including its roots. Afterward, plant each section in a new pot.

You can also attempt propagation using air layering. For this, you'll need plastic wrap, string or zip ties, and sphagnum moss.

First, prepare a piece of plastic wrap large enough to wrap around a section of the stem. Saturate the sphagnum moss with water, then gently squeeze out the excess. Select the stem and node you wish to propagate, then wrap the area with the moss.

Wrap the moss with plastic wrap and secure it tightly with string or a tie. Once sufficient roots have grown within the moss, cut the stem below the rooted section and plant it in a new pot.

Pest and Problem Management

Monstera is generally easy to care for and relatively resistant to pests. The most common issues relate to watering, such as yellowing or curling leaves. Leaves may curl if the plant is underwatered, and turn yellow if overwatered.

One of the great joys of growing Monstera is observing the beautiful fenestrations (splits) in its large leaves. If your Monstera leaves aren't splitting, it's usually because the plant hasn't matured enough yet.

Generally, Monstera leaves start to split when the plant is about 2-3 years old. If a mature Monstera's leaves are not splitting, consider increasing the amount of light it receives, either near a window or with a grow light.

Types of Monstera

Monstera Deliciosa

This is the most common and widely seen Monstera variety. It's characterized by heart-shaped leaves with naturally occurring holes and splits.

Variegated Monstera Deliciosa

This variety is distinguished by unique white and pale green variegation on its leaves. It also tends to grow faster than the non-variegated Monstera Deliciosa.

Monstera Obliqua

Unlike typical Monsteras where the splits extend to the leaf edges, Monstera Obliqua is characterized by unique holes that do not reach the leaf margins. Additionally, the size of its mature leaves is smaller than other Monstera varieties.
