How to Grow and Care for Monstera Indoor Plants

Commonly known as the Swiss cheese plant, Monstera is an instantly recognizable plant thanks to the distinctive holes in its large, unique leaves. With leaves ranging in color from emerald green to deep forest green, Monstera has become a popular tropical indoor plant. This vining plant is native to the tropical rainforests of Central America. When grown indoors, it will be much smaller than in nature, depending on the pot size, cultivar, and amount of light it receives. Read on to learn how to grow and care for your Monstera to keep it healthy.

Essential Tips for Monstera Care

Monstera may seem a bit challenging for first-time indoor plant owners, but in reality, it's a relatively easy plant to care for. Even if you don't have much experience with plants, anyone can enjoy the charm of Monstera at home.

Light

As a tropical plant, Monstera needs ample light. Aim for about 5-8 hours of bright, indirect light per day. Variegated Monstera varieties require more light to maintain and develop the beautiful colors on their leaves. For variegated types, it's best to provide 5-12 hours of light per day.

Try placing your Monstera near a north or south-facing window to ensure it receives sufficient natural light. However, depending on the season and indoor environment, especially in winter, it might be challenging to provide enough light. In such cases, using a grow light can help your Monstera continue to grow healthily.

Soil and Watering

Monstera generally needs watering about once every 1-2 weeks. When watering, ensure the entire soil is thoroughly soaked, and check that water drains well from the bottom of the pot.

It's best to discard any standing water in the saucer immediately, or water the plant in a place where water can drain freely, such as a terrace, shower, or sink. To prevent root rot, allow the soil to dry out somewhat between waterings. Also, it's important to use well-draining potting mix.

Temperature and Humidity

Like most indoor plants, Monstera prefers warm temperatures, around 18-29°C (65-85°F). Be careful not to let the indoor temperature drop below 15°C (59°F). Sudden cold can stress the Monstera, stopping its growth.

Monstera generally thrives even in typical indoor humidity. However, if your home environment is on the drier side, using a humidifier can be beneficial. Misting the leaves lightly once a week can also help create the tropical environment that Monstera loves.

Fertilizer

Monstera is a fast-growing plant, so consistent fertilization is important. During the spring and summer growing season, fertilize about once a month. A balanced 20-20-20 liquid all-purpose fertilizer is convenient to use and provides nutrients easily.

How to Prune Monstera

Monstera is a fast-growing plant, capable of growing about 30-60 cm (1-2 feet) per year. With such rapid growth, regular pruning is important for the plant's shape and health. Remove yellowing leaves or weak, wilting stems to help the plant grow healthily.

How to Pot and Repot Monstera

Monstera generally needs repotting every 2-3 years for healthy growth. Signs that the pot needs to be larger include roots growing out of the drainage holes, slowed or stopped growth, soil drying out faster than before, or extensive wilting of leaves.

The appropriate pot size depends on the current size and growth rate of your plant. It's better to gradually increase the pot size rather than moving to a much larger pot all at once. Too much excess soil can keep the soil wet for too long, increasing the risk of root rot.

Choosing an unglazed clay or terracotta pot can also be beneficial, as it helps keep the soil relatively dry while providing adequate moisture to the roots.

When potting, install a moss pole or wooden stake to provide stable support for the plant. You can gently secure the vines to the support with string or wire. This also helps aerial roots climb up the support.

During repotting, long stems or wide leaves of Monstera can be easily damaged, so handle them carefully, providing ample support to the stems and leaves during the process.

How to Propagate Monstera

Monstera is a very easy plant to propagate. The simplest method is stem cutting. First, select a healthy, growing stem with a few leaves. When making the cutting, cut just below a node, which is the point where a leaf connects to the stem.

Then, place the cut stem in a glass of water and wait for roots to grow. This typically takes about 2-3 weeks. When propagating in water, change the water every 3-5 days to prevent the cutting from rotting.

Monstera can also be propagated by division. This method involves separating part of one plant to grow as a new individual. The best time for this is when repotting the plant, as it's easy to inspect the entire root system.

Choose the section you want to divide, then carefully separate it from the rest of the plant, ensuring it includes roots. Afterward, plant each section into a new pot.

You can also try air layering for propagation. For this, you will need plastic wrap, string or zip ties, and sphagnum moss.

First, prepare a piece of plastic wrap large enough to wrap around a section of the stem. Saturate the sphagnum moss with water, then gently squeeze out the excess. Select the stem and node you wish to propagate and wrap the moss around that section.

Wrap the plastic wrap around the moss and secure it tightly with string or ties. Once sufficient roots have grown within the moss, cut the stem below the rooted section and plant it in a new pot.

Pest and Problem Management

Monstera is generally easy to care for and relatively resistant to pests. The most common issues are yellowing leaves or leaf curling, which are often related to watering. Lack of water can cause leaves to curl, while overwatering can lead to yellow leaves.

One of the great joys of growing Monstera is observing the beautiful fenestrations (splits) that appear on its wide leaves. If your Monstera leaves aren't splitting, it's usually because the plant hasn't matured enough yet.

Generally, Monstera leaves start to develop fenestrations when the plant is around 2-3 years old. If a mature Monstera isn't showing splits, consider increasing the amount of light it receives, either near a window or with a grow light.

Types of Monstera

Monstera deliciosa

This is the most common and widely recognized Monstera variety. It's characterized by heart-shaped leaves with natural holes and fenestrations.

Variegated Monstera deliciosa

This variety is characterized by unique white and light green variegated patterns on its leaves. It also tends to grow faster than the non-variegated Monstera deliciosa.

Monstera obliqua

Unlike other Monsteras where the splits extend to the leaf edges, Monstera obliqua features distinctive holes that don't reach the leaf margins. Additionally, the mature leaves of this variety are smaller than those of other Monstera species.
