몬스테라 알보 키우기 및 관리 방법 (Monstera Albo)

Aug 28, 2026
몬스테라 알보 키우기 및 관리 방법 (Monstera Albo)

Monstera deliciosa 'Albo Borsigiana', or Monstera Albo, is a rare and highly sought-after plant, cherished by many plant collectors. Its beautiful leaf patterns and high rarity make it a constant favorite on the wish lists of plant enthusiasts worldwide. Monstera Albo is highly valued, sometimes trading for hundreds to thousands of dollars, and this popularity has led to consistently high demand in the online plant market.

Monstera Albo is a cultivar of the common Monstera deliciosa, characterized by its split leaves and broad, irregularly appearing natural white variegation. It is a tropical foliage plant that grows slower than typical Monsteras. It thrives best in environments with bright, indirect light, moist but well-draining, fertile soil, warm temperatures, and high humidity. Please note that Monstera Albo can be harmful to pets, so ensure pets do not ingest its leaves or stems.

Monstera Albo Care Guide

Originally from the rainforests of Central America, Monstera Albo is a beloved indoor foliage plant known for its striking leaves and unique patterns. It tends to do well in most indoor environments. If you have experience growing **Monstera deliciosa**, it will be a great help in caring for Albo, as their basic care methods are very similar. However, Monstera Albo generally requires a bit more meticulous care than common Monsteras, so it's good to be aware of a few differences.

The main care conditions for healthy Monstera Albo growth are as follows:

• Provide at least 6 hours of bright, indirect light. Soft light filtered through curtains or a window is better than direct sunlight.

• Use fertile, well-draining soil. It is important that water does not stay around the roots for too long.

• Water when the soil begins to dry out. When watering, check the soil condition first and be careful not to overwater.

• Maintain temperatures between approximately 18-27°C (65-80°F) and humidity at least 60% or higher. A warm and humid environment promotes healthy growth for Monstera Albo.

• Fertilize regularly. However, using too much fertilizer can damage the roots, so it's important to use the correct amount.

Light

To maintain the beautiful and abundant variegation of Monstera Albo, it is crucial to provide ample bright, indirect light. Ensure it receives at least 6-7 hours of filtered light daily.

The variegated parts of Monstera Albo leaves are more sensitive to sunlight than the green parts, so avoiding strong direct sunlight is essential. Conversely, if there isn't enough light, the variegation may diminish or disappear, making Monstera Albo unsuitable for dark environments.

Soil

Monstera Albo thrives in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil. A blend of perlite, leca or orchid bark, coco peat, and coco coir in equal parts can provide balanced drainage and moisture retention, along with the necessary nutrients and aeration for Monstera Albo. Adding a small amount of natural fertilizer, such as worm castings, can further enhance nutrient supply.

Watering

Although Monstera Albo is a tropical plant, overwatering can easily lead to root rot. Therefore, it's important to allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. After confirming that the top 2.5-5 cm (1-2 inches) of soil has dried, water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot.

Temperature and Humidity

Like other Monstera species, Monstera Albo thrives best in a warm environment, with an ideal temperature of **approximately 18-27°C (65-80°F)**. This makes it well-suited for indoor cultivation, and it can also be grown outdoors during the summer. Furthermore, in USDA hardiness zones 9-11, it can be cultivated outdoors year-round.

Monstera Albo grows most healthily at a minimum humidity of 60% or higher, which is typically higher than average indoor humidity. Therefore, additional humidity management may be necessary, such as placing a humidifier nearby, grouping it with other plants, or growing it in naturally humid spaces like bathrooms or kitchens.

Fertilizer

Monstera Albo, with its beautiful variegated leaves, requires more consistent and meticulous nutrient management than a typical Monstera deliciosa. However, over-fertilizing can burden the plant, so it's important to stick to the appropriate amount and frequency.

Use potting soil that contains natural fertilizers, and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month according to the product label's instructions and recommended dosage. It's best to stop fertilizing in autumn and winter when the plant's growth slows down.

Types of Monstera Albo

If you're having trouble finding the Monstera Albo you want, consider other varieties. Each cultivar has slightly different leaf shapes and patterns, offering unique charms.

  • Monstera deliciosa 'Albo Variegata': Characterized by dark green leaves mixed with cream.

  • Monstera adansonii 'Albo Variegata': A very rare variety with cream and green variegated split leaves, featuring many holes.

  • Monstera deliciosa 'Albo Borsigiana': Characterized by mostly white leaves with some green mixed in.

  • Monstera adansonii f. variegata 'Variegated Laniata Albo': Features tricolor leaves with dark green, light green, and white, with some leaves having a glossy surface.

  • Monstera Marbled Albo: The rarest type, featuring deeply split leaves with a unique mottled pattern of white and green.

Pruning

Monstera Albo generally doesn't require special pruning beyond removing yellowing or wilting leaves. However, if the plant grows too large and needs tidying, it's best to prune during the active growing season.

When pruning, first sterilize your scissors or pruning tools, then cut directly above a growth node. After pruning, water thoroughly but avoid fertilizing immediately.

To help your Monstera Albo grow large, healthy leaves, install a moss pole. Monsteras are vining plants that climb trees in nature, so providing a moss pole indoors helps them grow more stably.

Monstera Albo Propagation Methods

The beautiful white variegation of Monstera Albo is a natural mutation, so the most common method of propagating new plants is through stem cuttings. While the propagation method itself is quite similar to that of common Monstera deliciosa and relatively simple, variegated Monsteras may take longer to root and grow than non-variegated ones, so patience is key.

Variegated Monstera Albo is often purchased as new cuttings or already rooted stem cuttings. If you're wondering how to care for newly acquired Monstera Albo cuttings, follow these steps:

  1. Using sterilized sharp pruning shears or scissors, cut a stem from a healthy Monstera Albo. An ideal cutting will have at least 1-3 nodes (growth points) on the stem, with enough leaves corresponding to the number of nodes.

  2. Remove 1-2 leaves from the bottom of the cutting to expose the lower nodes of the stem, and leave at least one leaf on the upper part of the cutting.

  3. Next, choose which medium to root the cutting in. You can use sphagnum moss, water, LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate), or perlite.

  4. Prepare the chosen medium in a small container. If using sphagnum moss, LECA, or perlite, pre-soak them thoroughly and keep the medium consistently moist while the roots are growing.

  5. Place the cutting into the prepared medium, ensuring the exposed lower nodes are within the medium. However, be careful not to let the remaining leaves touch or be buried by the medium.

  6. Place the cutting in a spot with bright, indirect light. Roots will begin to grow after a few weeks. Keep the medium consistently moist while rooting, and if rooting in water, change the water once a week.

  7. Once the roots have grown to at least 5-7 cm (2-3 inches), you can transfer the rooted cutting to rich, well-draining potting soil. Pre-moisten the soil before planting the cutting.

  8. Place the potted cutting back in a spot with bright, indirect light, and for the first 1-2 weeks, keep the soil evenly moist to help it adapt to its new environment.

Monstera Albo Repotting Guide

Monstera Albo is a slow grower, so repotting every 2-3 years is generally sufficient. Repotting is best done from early to late spring or during summer, when the plant actively starts growing. Avoid repotting in autumn and winter when the plant enters dormancy. For the new pot, choose one size larger than the current pot, or about 5-7 cm (2-3 inches) wider in diameter.

First, carefully remove the plant from its current pot. Gently loosen as much soil around the roots as possible, being careful not to break them. Remove as much old soil as you can. Then, place the root ball into the new pot, fill around it with new potting mix, and water thoroughly. Finally, return it to its original spot and resume your normal watering routine.
